Plan how to fund your studies

Understand the questions to ask about bursaries, NSFAS and application costs.

Start with the full cost

Tuition is one part of a study budget. Research accommodation, transport, food, learning materials and any application or assessment costs. Use the institution’s current fee information and write down what is an estimate.

Research funding separately from admission

A university application and a funding application may be separate processes. An offer of a place is not automatically an offer of funding. Check the relevant funder’s rules and keep both sets of deadlines in your plan.

Understand your options

  • NSFAS: Read the current eligibility rules, required documents and application instructions directly on the official NSFAS website.
  • Institutional funding: Check the financial-aid page of each institution on your shortlist.
  • External bursaries: Research the funder, supported qualifications, selection conditions and obligations before applying.
  • Other finance: Understand repayment terms and the total cost before making a financial commitment.

Ask what is actually covered

Does the funding cover tuition only, or living costs too? Is it renewable? Are there academic conditions or work obligations? What happens if your course or circumstances change? Get the conditions from the provider directly.

Keep your records safe

Follow the provider’s official instructions and save copies of acknowledgements. Verify payment requests independently before paying. Do not send identity records or banking details to unverified contacts.
